Holiday breaks
Public-school holidays: family trips from Cape Town
The Western Cape education department's calendar, which matches the national Government Gazette, gives learner term dates for public schools. The 2026 learner term ends on 9 December and 2027 starts on 13 January, leaving a derived 10 December – 12 January break. In 2027, terms end on 19 March, 25 June and 22 September and the next ones start on 6 April, 20 July and 5 October, so the derived breaks are 20 March – 5 April, 26 June – 19 July and 23 September – 4 October. Learners finish on 8 December 2027 and staff on 10 December. Independent schools differ.

What to weigh
- The March–April break is seventeen days, enough for the seven-day example.
- Staff dates differ from learner dates; teachers in the family should check both.
- The shortlist is ranked on modelled cost only; it does not filter by flight time, direct service, weather or entry rules. Check those yourself.
- The budget is an editable illustration in local currency for a family of four, not a typical, recommended or guaranteed amount.
Questions
