Bangkok or Chiang Mai? Which city to base yourself in

Both are Thai city bases, but they ask for different trips. Bangkok is the arrival point, the connection hub and the loudest choice; Chiang Mai is the slower northern base people stay in for weeks. The daily planning ranges below still overlap at all three levels, so the money alone will not decide it; the day itself is what differs.

Calmer and lower-rise than Bangkok, yet genuinely active around food, cafés, markets and evening streets — a gentler city, not a sleepy village.
What it is good for
Culture, food, markets, wellness, remote work, longer stays, nature access and a gentler city base for northern Thailand.
The reality
Rewarding and comparatively affordable, but neighbourhood choice, heat and rain, transport limits, road safety and seasonal smoke materially change the experience.

  • SantithamA working local neighbourhood: cheap northern food, small markets, long-term rentals and everyday errands.Best for: value on a stay of a month or more. Strength: local prices with Nimman next door. Watch out for: a less polished streetscape and no landmark attractions at the door.

What people find hard in each city

Bangkok

  • Sustained heat and humidity cut how much can honestly be done outdoors in one day.
  • Road journeys are unpredictable; anything scheduled off the rail network needs a wide time buffer.
  • Air quality can drop noticeably in the dry months, which matters more the longer the stay.

Chiang Mai

  • Smoke pollution can become severe in the late dry season, and the exact weeks change from year to year — check current air quality before booking rather than trusting a fixed window.
  • Outside a walkable district, movement depends on songthaews, ride-hailing or your own vehicle; car-free life is workable but not seamless.
  • Scooters are common, but they are neither necessary nor risk-free: licensing, insurance validity, helmets and mixed traffic all deserve a decision before you rent one.

What would make you choose one

Choose Bangkok when you want onward flights, late hours, large-city choice and a base that keeps working at any time of day.

Choose Chiang Mai when you want a calmer rhythm and nature and culture within reach of one base; its range sits lower at each level, but the two ranges overlap, so a cheaper trip is not guaranteed.
