MTC cost guide

How much does a week in Sydney cost?

A central Sydney week for two, 10–16 November 2026: city hotels, public transport on Opal fare caps, a guided Opera House tour and food at Sydney prices. Beach days, the Blue Mountains and other day trips are not priced.

Scope, dates and party

These are dated ground-cost examples for two adults sharing one room, staying six nights over seven days, 10–16 November 2026. International flights, visas, insurance and shopping are excluded. They are planning examples, not live booking offers or year-round price ranges.

What is specific to this budget

  • The A and B baskets keep the same hotel and differ mainly in dinners.
  • The budget, mid-range and luxury tiers are led by the hotel: each tier is one named, date-matched hotel, and baskets A and B mainly change the food and activity mix; in some scopes (for example Rio) a basket also swaps transport, such as a private tour replacing bus trips. A higher hotel tier does not imply luxury dining or private transport.
  • What changes the bill most: the hotel you pick, the season and exact dates, and whether you keep to public transport. Party composition and room requirements can change pricing; these examples are for two adults in one room, so a different party needs repricing rather than linear multiplication.

Public transport budget

Opal fares cap automatically: the examples apply the weekly cap for the first calendar week of the stay and one daily cap on the Monday of the second week. Opal caps apply when you tap on and off with the same Opal card, contactless card or device each time.

The airport station access fee is charged on top of the fare and is not covered by the caps, so it is a separate line for each airport trip.

Dated cost examples

Six dated, itemised examples from 2026-11-10 to 2026-11-16: 6 nights and 7 days for two adults sharing one room, which is 14 person-days. Prices are as observed in September 2026, cover ground costs only, and are not multiplied out to other party sizes or trip lengths.

Dated planning estimate for two adults sharing one room, 10–16 November 2026, seven days/six nights. Flights excluded. Actual prices, availability, taxes and transport timing may differ; see the assumptions.

Public transport uses the Opal fare caps for these exact dates; the airport station fee is separate and is not inside the caps.

Practical notes

Use the airport train from SYD with one payment method per adult. The standard train fare sits inside the transit allowance; airport station access is a separate charge each way. The November 10–16 example crosses two Monday–Sunday fare weeks, so it allows the first weekly cap plus one Monday daily cap. Eligible ordinary public ferries are inside the network allowance; private sightseeing cruises are not. The Opera House admission is a pre booked tour, not a performance ticket. Preserve the existing scoring weights, short-stay premium and longer-duration formulas.

Limits of these examples

A dated example, not a year-round price. Food ranges come from traveller spending reports, not live restaurant menus. Hotel meals were not shown, so food is bought separately. Fare caps are maximums, not required spending, and other dates need the weekly cap recalculated. The standard Opera House tour includes stairs; performances and accessible-access tickets are not priced.
