MTCBudget guide

Travelling independently or joining a group tour

The short answer

Choose independent travel for control over pace, route and budget; choose a group tour for built-in company, a set plan and someone else handling logistics. Neither is automatically cheaper: a tour bundles services, and solo travellers on either option often pay the full room.

The worked example shows the independent cost for one traveller and for two sharing. The gap is mostly the room. Some tours charge a single supplement for the same reason; ask whether room sharing with another participant is offered.

To compare with a tour price, list what the tour includes — rooms, meals, transport, guides, entry tickets — and add what it excludes, such as flights, tips and free-time meals.

How to do it

  1. Decide how much of each day you want planned for you.
  2. Price the independent version for your party size in the calculator.
  3. List the tour's inclusions and exclusions line by line.
  4. Compare like with like: the same nights, room type and activities.

Worked example

One scenario priced for one traveller and for two sharing a room.

Scenario: Vietnam · departing Riyadh · December · 10 days · 1 traveller · Mid-range · SAR · flights included

What this example assumes

  • On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
  • Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
  • Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.

Cost data reference: 2026-08-23. Opening this page does not refresh it.

Where this goes wrong

  • Comparing a tour price with only your hotel and flight, leaving out guides, entries and transfers.
  • Missing the single supplement in the tour's small print.
  • Assuming a tour means no free time costs: free days and evenings are usually self-funded.

What this guide does not do

  • Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
  • Visa costs, travel insurance and card charges are conditional questions that depend on your passport, your insurer and your bank. This guide tells you to ask them; it does not answer them for you, and it is not legal or financial advice.
