How to choose a destination when you travel alone

The short answer

There is no single best solo destination. Start with the whole-trip total for one traveller, because a room is not shared, then match interests, pace and whether you want a social or quiet trip. The worked example compares three destinations for one traveller on the same dates.

Travelling alone changes the arithmetic more than the destination list: accommodation is paid by one person, and so are taxis and private transfers. Daily food and entry tickets scale normally.

This guide does not rank countries by safety. Personal safety depends on your circumstances and current official advice, which you should read for your own passport and dates.

How to do it

  1. Set the budget for one person with flights included, not a per-person share of a double room.
  2. Pick two or three interests that matter most; the finder uses them directly instead of a generic list.
  3. Decide how social you want the trip to be. Busy hostels, group day tours and walkable centres make company easier to find; a quiet trip can use fewer, calmer bases.
  4. Prepare the basics before booking: share your itinerary with someone at home, keep digital and paper copies of documents, and plan your arrival for daylight where you can.

What this example assumes

  • On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
  • Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.
  • One traveller in one room, so the whole room cost is carried by one person.

Cost data reference: 2026-08-23. Opening this page does not refresh it.

Where this goes wrong

  • Dividing a couple's quoted price by two: the room share does not halve for a solo traveller.
  • Choosing by a 'best for solo' list that ignores your own interests and budget.
  • Arriving late at night in an unfamiliar city without a booked first night and transfer.

What this guide does not do

  • Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
  • Visa costs, travel insurance and card charges are conditional questions that depend on your passport, your insurer and your bank. This guide tells you to ask them; it does not answer them for you, and it is not legal or financial advice.
