Guangzhou or Chengdu for a January week?

Choose Guangzhou for Cantonese food, old streets, Shamian Island and the Pearl River skyline; choose Chengdu for teahouses, Sichuan cooking and a slower pace. Both sets use the same dates, party and room basis, but the hotels and price treatment differ.

Scope, dates and party

These are dated ground-cost illustrations for two adults sharing one room, six nights over seven days, 19–25 January 2027. Hotel prices are public room-table observations from 2 October 2026, not checkout quotes. Flights, visas, insurance and regional trips are excluded. They are not bookable and not year-round ranges or calculator defaults.

What is specific to this budget

  • Hotel tax: two Guangzhou hotels add a provisional 6% VAT reserve; Chengdu hotel prices are gross, tax-inclusive table prices with no reserve added.
  • Breakfast: all three Guangzhou rates are room only, while all three Chengdu offers include breakfast for two (12 credited once).
  • Meals: both cities use upscale hotel-restaurant menus (Cantonese in Guangzhou, Italian in Chengdu) with VAT and service included — benchmarks, not cheap local averages.

Trade-offs

Guangzhou is hotter and more humid for much of the year and busier during trade fairs; Chengdu is often grey in winter but rewards slow days. Tianfu (TFU) is Chengdu's main international airport and is far from the centre; Baiyun (CAN) serves Guangzhou.

Dated ground cost side by side

Basket A at each named hotel, same party and dates, flights excluded. Samples 1–3 follow each city's observed room-price order only; they are not matched quality tiers, and the hotels in a row are not equivalents. Scopes differ, so read the full itemised examples on each cost guide before deciding.

The tax is mandatory, not optional, but this is a calculated reserve — not an observed checkout total or a guaranteed maximum; replace it with the actual charge and never pay any part twice. All three rates are room only: the hotels' optional breakfasts are not credited, so all 14 breakfasts are budgeted. Qualified illustration, not a checkout quote: hotel prices are dated public room-table observations in whole currency units; deposits and unlisted extras are unknown, not zero. All three offers include breakfast for two: 12 breakfasts are credited once, leaving two outside breakfasts and 28 lunches and dinners. Sample 3White Swan Hotel1,915.30 USD136.81 USD per person per ground daySubtotal before any tax reserve: 1,915.30 USD (no reserve added). No separate tax reserve is added: White Swan's table shows 15% service included and no excluded tax, and another hotel's 6% VAT is not copied onto it.
