MTC cost guide

Geneva and Lucerne hotel taxes and guest cards

Swiss hotel prices are sometimes shown with tax included and sometimes without, and both cities give eligible hotel guests a local transport card. Here is how each is handled.

Scope, dates and party

These are dated ground-cost illustrations for two adults sharing one room, six nights over seven days, 19–25 January 2027, in the cities of Geneva and Lucerne. Hotel prices are public room-table observations from 2 October 2026, not checkout-reconciled quotes. Flights, visas, insurance, mountain and lake excursions are excluded. They are not bookable and not year-round ranges or calculator defaults.

What is specific to this budget

  • Geneva: ibis shows taxes included, so nothing is added. Kipling and Warwick show prices before tax, so 3.8% VAT and the official per-person city tax are reserved; the provider's rounded city-tax figure is not exact.
  • Lucerne: all three hotels show taxes included, so no VAT or city tax is added. That is not a guarantee that no other fee applies.
  • Geneva Transport Card: for eligible accommodation guests, covering zone 10 except Céligny and the airport–Cornavin journey. Under current rules it can be obtained up to three days before arrival. It does not cover France or taxis.
  • Lucerne visitor card: for eligible overnight guests in the city, covering buses and second-class trains in zone 10. Lake boats, mountain railways and the Zurich Airport train are not covered.
  • Both sets keep a small transit contingency in the total. It is not the price of either card and not a maximum.

Restaurant prices

The Swiss restaurant menus used here include 8.1% VAT, so nothing is added to meal prices.
