Should you stay in a medina riad or a modern-city hotel in Fes? Choose a riad inside or beside Fes el-Bali if you want atmosphere and to walk out into the lanes; choose the modern city (Ville Nouvelle) if parking and taxis to the door matter more; for step-free needs, verify each property individually. All three priced examples below are riads in the medina; modern-city hotels were not priced in this research, so no price comparison between the two is claimed.

These are dated ground-cost examples for two adults sharing one room, six nights over seven days, 19–25 January 2027, checked on 1 October 2026. Flights, visas, insurance, shopping and unlisted excursions are excluded. What is specific to this budget

Three named hotels, each with two baskets. Baskets A and B keep the hotel and change only the meal basket; activities stay the same. Every hotel's room, rate, breakfast terms and cancellation conditions are printed beside its figures.
Every hotel here includes breakfast for two, so the twelve hotel breakfasts are deducted once and never bought again; taxes already inside a hotel or menu price are not added a second time. Lines marked as MTC allowances are planning budgets, not supplier prices.

Riad in the medina or a modern-city hotel

A riad puts you inside the historic lanes, usually around a courtyard, but cars stop at the gates: ask for the exact entrance, the walk from the drop-off point, the number of stairs and whether luggage help is offered. The car lines in these examples do not promise door-to-door access in the medina.

A modern-city hotel trades atmosphere for easier taxis, and adds a ride each time you visit the medina. Being in the modern city does not guarantee an accessible room or a lift; confirm these with the property. Planning the days

Allow three to four days for a measured introduction to the medina, selected monuments and local food. A qualified local guide can help with context and navigation; agree the itinerary and any shopping stops in advance. Leave time to get back to the hotel without rushing.

Season

Spring and autumn are strong general choices for walking. Summer can be very hot, while winter needs warmer indoor expectations and rain alternatives. Riad heating and cooling should be checked as room features, not assumed from photographs.

Arrival and getting around

Arrive through FEZ and arrange a clear meeting point for a medina hotel. Ask about luggage assistance and stairs. Desert circuits, Chefchaouen and other imperial cities need separate nights and transport; they are not hidden additions to this city budget.
