Edinburgh vs Québec City

A historic winter city break: Scottish hilltop streets or a colder Québec old-town base.

Scope, dates and party

These are dated ground-cost examples for two adults sharing one room, six nights over seven days, 19–25 January 2027, researched on 30 September 2026. Flights, visas, insurance, shopping and unlisted excursions are excluded. Hotel rates are observations, not booked inventory or checkout prices, and the figures are not year-round ranges or calculator defaults.

What is specific to this budget

  • Both examples use two adults, one room and 19–25 January 2027. Compare equivalent hotel tiers and meal variants. This is a fixed ground-cost illustration, not a live fare quote, an annual price ranking or a six-night minimum-stay recommendation.
  • Three hotel-led tiers, each a named hotel observed for these dates, with two baskets each. Baskets A and B keep the hotel and change the meal and activity mix; a higher hotel tier does not imply luxury dining or private transport. Each hotel's name and its tax treatment are shown beside its figures.

Trade-offs

Edinburgh suits castle and gallery days with tram access; Québec suits a compact heritage stay with winter conditions built into the plan. Neither sample includes skiing or a festival package. Flight routing and winter clothing can change the decision and are outside these ground totals.

What the Edinburgh trip covers

Edinburgh rewards a slower city break: the Royal Mile links castle views and closes, while the New Town offers broad streets, galleries and independent shops. Its appeal is the contrast between a dramatic historic skyline and neighbourhood life—not a substitute for a Highlands road trip.

What the Québec City trip covers

Québec City offers a compact historic core with stone streets, river views and a strong sense of place. Winter changes the pace: short outdoor walks work best between museums, cafés and warm indoor stops. This is a central-city stay, keeping the focus on Old Québec rather than adding a ski resort or a long regional drive.

Season and travel conditions

May to September gives longer daylight. August is lively but festival demand can raise costs sharply. January is a short-day, cold-weather museum-and-city example; it is not a Christmas-market itinerary. Wind and rain can affect hill walks in any season.

June–September gives the broadest comfortable walking window, with autumn colour dependent on the year. Winter suits travellers who actively want cold-weather city scenery and prepare for it. January dates do not imply that Christmas markets or Winter Carnival are operating. Snow, ice and daylight affect accessibility and the amount of outdoor sightseeing.

Limits of these examples

Airport trams suit light luggage and a feasible last walk; allow roughly 45–75 minutes to a central hotel including waiting. Confirm halal preparation directly rather than assuming vegetarian dishes or seafood use no alcohol. The new visitor levy needs an explicit check on the final accommodation invoice.

YQB is the arrival airport, not Montréal. Allow roughly 25–45 minutes to central accommodation in ordinary road conditions and more during winter disruption. The airport taxi amount is a planning allowance, not a verified current fixed fare. Check restaurant ingredients and halal preparation; warm clothing and suitable footwear are personal purchases outside the trip model.
