Why a daily budget and a trip total are not the same number
The short answer
A daily budget is a per-person, per-day figure for being there — food, getting around, activities, accommodation, the ordinary run of the day. It excludes international airfare entirely. A trip total is everyone's flights plus everyone's days plus the rooms you actually book. You cannot get from one to the other by multiplying days by people, because accommodation is priced per room and some costs are shared.
Rooms are the clearest example. One traveller pays for a room alone; two share the same room, so the per-person daily figure drops without anything getting cheaper. Add a third and a second room appears, and the per-person figure moves back up.
This is why the per-day figure is useful for comparing destinations but not sufficient on its own for a party's exact total. Use it to answer "is this place expensive?" and use the total to answer "can we afford this trip?".
How to do it
- Start from the per-person, per-day ground figure to judge how expensive a place is. It is the comparable number across destinations.
- Then build the total properly: flights for every traveller, ground costs across your real number of days, and rooms at one room per two people.
- Watch the per-person figure change as the party grows. If it moves when you add a traveller, that is the room arithmetic, not a price change.
- Never price a child as a discounted adult. There is no age-based discount in this model, so a child is a traveller at the same rates.
Worked example
The same destination, month and trip length, for one, two and three travellers. The last column is the ground cost only, divided by travellers and by days:

What this example assumes
- Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
- On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
- The published per-day cost band is a canonical figure: US dollars, per person, per day, on the ground only, for seven days and six nights in shoulder season, two adults sharing one room. It includes no international airfare.
- Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.

Where this goes wrong
- Multiplying the standard daily band by days and travellers without checking its reference assumptions. It already allocates shared accommodation for two adults in one room. Other party sizes and night counts need the model's room and shared-cost adjustments; adding a separate room charge on top would count accommodation twice.
- Adding airfare into a per-day figure. The per-day band is ground only, by definition, so a per-day number that includes flights is a different quantity with the same name.
- Assuming three travellers cost one and a half times two. The second room does not arrive in halves.
What this guide does not do
- Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
- The model has no ages and no child discount, so a party of three is priced as three travellers sharing rooms by capacity.
