MTCBudget guide

How many days can you afford, and how many does the trip need?

The short answer

In this same-month model example, adding days changes only part of the budget. Modelled airfare stays fixed while accommodation follows nights and food, activities and local travel follow days. The longer examples cost more in total and spread the airfare over more days. Real fares can also change when you change the dates.

MTC records a sensible minimum and an ideal duration range for each destination. Georgia's recorded minimum is five days. These are planning judgments about a useful visit, not a mathematical break-even point or a flight schedule.

Nights and days are counted separately and deliberately. A seven-day trip has six nights, so accommodation is charged for six, while food and local transport cover all seven. When you plan from exact dates, the real number of nights between them is what is used.

How to do it

  1. Look at the total for each length, then at the difference between them. That difference is the real price of an extra few days.
  2. Check the getting-there column: it should barely move. If almost all the growth is in being there, the extra days are buying you time rather than logistics.
  3. Respect the destination's sensible minimum. Below it you are paying full airfare for a fraction of the trip.
  4. If ten days exceeds your budget, compare a shorter sensible trip, another spending style or a different destination. Keep the recorded duration guidance visible when weighing those trade-offs.
  5. Recheck nights whenever the dates change. Moving departure and return together can preserve the length; moving only one endpoint can change the number of days and nights.

Worked example

The same destination, departure city, month, party and travel style at three trip lengths:

Scenario: Georgia · departing Riyadh · November · 7 days · 2 travellers · Mid-range · SAR · flights included

Trip lengthGetting thereGround spendingWhole-trip total
5 days⁨2,750–4,300 SAR⁩⁨2,550–4,050 SAR⁩⁨5,300–8,350 SAR⁩
7 days⁨2,750–4,300 SAR⁩⁨3,650–5,800 SAR⁩⁨6,400–10,100 SAR⁩
10 days⁨2,750–4,300 SAR⁩⁨5,350–8,350 SAR⁩⁨8,100–12,650 SAR⁩
  • The sensible minimum for this destination is 5 days, and its ideal length is 7–12 days.

What this example assumes

  • Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.
  • On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
  • Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
  • Nights are days minus one for a planned length like these. Exact dates override that with the real number of nights between them.

Cost data reference: 2026-08-23. Opening this page does not refresh it.

Where this goes wrong

  • Assuming ten days costs twice what five days costs. Airfare is paid once, so it does not.
  • Treating a length below the recorded sensible minimum as equally suitable merely because the total is lower. Review what you can realistically do in that time before choosing it.
  • Adding days without adding nights, or the reverse. Seven days is six nights; the two lines move together but are not the same number.
  • Reading these lengths as an itinerary. This page does not plan your days, and it does not know any flight schedule.

What this guide does not do

  • Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
  • Month suitability and modelled prices are not a weather forecast and not a fare forecast. They describe what a month is typically like, not what your dates will be.
