Budget, mid-range and luxury travel: what actually changes in the total

The short answer

Travel style changes how much you spend on the ground, not where you go. Across the three styles the accommodation, food and activities lines move the most, local transport moves less, and the airfare line is driven by your route and month rather than by your style. The table below prices one identical trip at all three styles so you can see the size of the step rather than guess it.

The styles are spending levels, not product promises. Choosing the top style does not entitle you to a star rating, a named chain, a pool, a sea view or an available room on your dates. It raises the assumed nightly and daily spend, and nothing else.

The useful question is not which style you "are", but which line you want the money in. Many travellers get more out of a mid-range room and the top style's activities budget than out of the reverse.

How to do it

  1. Read the three totals first to see the size of the step between them for this destination. It is not the same size everywhere.
  2. Then read the components: the gap between styles sits mostly in accommodation, food and activities.
  3. Notice what barely moves. If local transport is nearly identical across styles, spending up there is not what makes the trip feel different.
  4. Pick the style that reflects how you intend to spend. If the total is too high, compare a shorter sensible trip, a different spending style and another destination, then choose the trade-off that matters least to you.

Worked example

One trip, three travel styles, everything else identical:

Scenario: Thailand · departing Riyadh · November · 7 days · 2 travellers · Mid-range · SAR · flights included

What this example assumes

  • On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
  • Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
  • Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.

Where this goes wrong

  • Expecting a star rating or a named amenity from a spending level. No rating, chain, facility or availability is promised anywhere in this model.
  • Choosing the lowest style to make the total fit, then travelling the way you always do. The estimate will be wrong and it will be wrong by your own choice.
  • Comparing your style at one destination against a different style at another. That difference tells you about the styles, not the destinations.

What this guide does not do

  • Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
  • A style is a spending level, not a promise about star ratings, named hotels, named amenities or live availability.
