Chiang Mai

  • Smoke pollution can become severe in the late dry season, and the exact weeks change from year to year — check current air quality before booking rather than trusting a fixed window.
  • Outside a walkable district, movement depends on songthaews, ride-hailing or your own vehicle; car-free life is workable but not seamless.
  • Scooters are common, but they are neither necessary nor risk-free: licensing, insurance validity, helmets and mixed traffic all deserve a decision before you rent one.

Hanoi

  • Traffic noise and crossings can be tiring.
  • Air quality varies and should be checked day by day.
  • Summer humidity and winter dampness reduce comfort.
