How to check a travel estimate against a real booking
The short answer
Check seven things, in this order: that the dates and the number of travellers match, that the room actually sleeps your party, that the currency is the one you will be charged in, that the fare you compare includes the bags you will carry, that the accommodation price includes taxes and any per-person occupancy charge, that airport transfers are priced for your real arrival time, and that you have read the provider's own cancellation and change terms. Then look at what is left over and see whether it still fits.
This guide is not about how the estimate is produced — that is what the methodology page is for. This is the opposite direction: you already have an estimate, you are about to spend real money, and you want to know where the two will disagree.
Most of the disagreement is structural, not random. A modelled estimate prices a typical week; a booking prices your week, with your bags, your room type, your arrival hour and your refundability. Each of those is a known place for the two to part company, which is why they can be checked one at a time.
How to do it
- Match the dates and the party exactly. An estimate for seven days and a booking for eight nights are not the same trip, and comparing them proves nothing.
- Check room capacity, not just room count. The model puts two travellers in a room; a property may cap a room at two, charge per extra person, or require a second room for a party of three.
- Compare fares with baggage on the same basis. A displayed comparison that includes bag fees is still an estimate — the airline's own size, weight and fee rules are what apply, so read them for the fare you are actually buying.
- Read the accommodation price to the last line: city or tourism tax, service charge, and anything collected at the property rather than at booking.
- Price the transfer for your actual arrival time and check whether the itinerary uses separate bookings. You may need to collect and re-check bags; review missed-connection and rebooking terms with the relevant providers.
- Read the cancellation and change terms from the provider you are actually booking with, including the deadlines. These conditions belong to that provider, not to the search tool that showed you the price.
- Finally, list what is still outside both numbers: entry costs, insurance, connectivity, card charges, and the reserve you decided to hold.
Worked example
The estimate you would be checking, line by line, for the stated scenario:
Scenario: Egypt · departing Riyadh · November · 7 days · 2 travellers · Mid-range · SAR · flights included
| Cost component | Modelled estimate |
|---|---|
| International flightsround trip · per person × 2 | 2,350–3,650 SAR |
| Accommodation6 nights · 1 room | 1,500–2,300 SAR |
| Food & daily spendingper person × 2 | 1,450–2,000 SAR |
| Activities & experiencesper person × 2 | 700–1,250 SAR |
| Local transportpartly shared | 400–600 SAR |
| Other / bufferper person × 2 | 350–650 SAR |
| Whole-trip total | 6,750–10,450 SAR |

What this example assumes
- Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.
- Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
- On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.

Where this goes wrong
- Assuming the modelled airfare confirms a baggage allowance. It does not verify a specific fare's bag count, size, weight or fees; check the airline's offer.
- Assuming the model confirms every tax in a room quote. Check the provider's itemised final price and any charges collected at the property.
- Relying on a refundable label alone. Eligibility, deadlines, exclusions and any fees in the booking terms determine what can be refunded.
- Cancelling the whole comparison because one line differs. A gap on one component is information about that component, not proof the estimate is wrong.
What this guide does not do
- Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
- Visa costs, travel insurance and card charges are conditional questions that depend on your passport, your insurer and your bank. This guide tells you to ask them; it does not answer them for you, and it is not legal or financial advice.
