How to budget a family holiday for the whole party

The short answer

Price the whole party, not one person. Rooms, transfers and car sizes move in steps as the family grows, so a fourth or fifth traveller can cost more than the average share. The worked example shows the same beach trip for three, four and five travellers.

MTC prices every traveller as an adult. Many hotels, airlines and attractions do have child rates, but their age rules differ, so check them for your children's ages rather than relying on a generic discount.

For family beach ideas, favour one base with short transfers and a beach you can reach on foot; each extra move costs a larger vehicle and a slower day.

How to do it

  1. Count beds and rooms first: one room per two travellers is the model; a family room or apartment may change that.
  2. Price the airport transfer for your whole party and luggage, not per seat.
  3. Choose activities by what the whole family will do, and price them per person.
  4. Check child fares and age rules with each provider before booking.

What this example assumes

  • On-the-ground costs come from the site's cost bands, whose data reference is 2026-08-23. Loading this page does not refresh that data.
  • Rooms are one room per two travellers. There is no children's pricing and no age-based discount anywhere in the model.
  • Airfare is modelled from the departure metro and the travel month. It is not a quote, and if you already hold a real fare you should enter it in the calculator so it replaces the modelled one.

Where this goes wrong

  • Multiplying a per-person price by the family size and ignoring room steps.
  • Assuming children are free or discounted without checking the provider's age rules.
  • Booking a car or transfer too small for the party's luggage.

What this guide does not do

  • Every figure on this page is a modelled estimate built from typical costs for the stated scenario. It is not a live fare, not a live room rate, not an offer and not a booking.
  • Visa costs, travel insurance and card charges are conditional questions that depend on your passport, your insurer and your bank. This guide tells you to ask them; it does not answer them for you, and it is not legal or financial advice.
